Who are the Coconut Castaways?
The Coconut Castaways were founded in May of 2007 as a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization based in Des Moines, Iowa. The club is a NATIONWIDE organization and we currently have members in several states! We are a community service organization whose members believe strongly in giving something back to our communities as often as time permits, putting in many hours of volunteer work each year. While we like to work hard and the majority of our activities are based on helping and volunteering for other nonprofits, we do have monthly "Jump Ups" where club members and their friends get together at different venues each month to socialize and discuss upcoming opportunities. Lastly, the Coconut Castaways are also the OFFICIAL national fan (friends!) club of Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band, one of the hottest Trop Rock bands in the country. If you enjoy the music of Howard Livingston, the laid-back, island way of life, and also care about volunteering and giving back to your community, YOU are a perfect candidate to become a Coconut Castaway!
Community Service Organization: "Serving Community Roles With Caribbean Souls"
Our club members know that there are organizations and individuals in our communities and beyond that can use our help. That is why we offer many opportunities for our members to engage in community service and volunteer work. Members can choose from several different volunteer opportunities throughout the year that fit into their schedules. Therefore, they are able to volunteer when it's most convenient for them and for activities that they enjoy and believe in. As community service is our number one priority, our Coconut Castaways slogan is "Serving Community Roles With Caribbean Souls" and many times when we are volunteering, we show off our "tropical spirit" with Hawaiian shirts, leis, grass skirts, palms trees, coconut cups, and all things tropical! We just want to have a FUN time while also helping those in need .. and it shows!! We also hold an annual fundraiser each year that supports the Children's Cancer Connection and we help at other fundraising events. Although the majority of our community service activities are in the Des Moines, Iowa area, we encourage ALL members throughout the country to volunteer whenever possible. Also, if your organization needs volunteers for an event and would like a fun, energetic group to help, please contact us! We will see if your event fits our schedule.
Social Organization: Jump Up with Us!
The Coconut Castaways hold monthly social gatherings for our local members called "Jump Ups". Each Jump Up will not only provide opportunities for fun and socializing, but also for discussions about our upcoming community involvement and charity work. Our social events could include picnics, attending a live music event or local celebration, or just hanging out at a casual venue and enjoying each others' company. We also have had AMAZING annual gatherings for our members nationwide to get to meet each other and spend time with Howard Livingston and the MM24 Band. The annual event also raises money for KOA Care Camps, an organization that sends kids with cancer to summer camp. We have made lasting friendships from these annual events and you will, too! We enjoyed club cruises in 2008 and 2009 and visited fun, Caribbean locations. In 2010, we moved our annual trip to the Florida Keys, where it is now named "Meet Me in the Keys" and club members attending get to hang out with Howard and the band at their favorite local spots. Our next annual trip will be held June 6-9, 2013.
Check out our Coconut Castaways Calendar to find out more about our upcoming Jump Ups and volunteer opportunities. We are always looking for new faces and fun things to do!
Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band Fan/Friend Club
The popularity of the Coconut Castaways nationwide is largely due to our connection with Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band, whose fan base is growing daily! Howard Livingston and the MM24 Band have won several Trop Rock Music Awards in the past couple of years, including 2008 and 2009 "Entertainer of the Year" and "Band of the Year" Awards! Howard's CD "I'm Living on an Island" was the Trop Rock CD of the Year in 2008 and the song "I'm Living on an Island" was Song of the Year, as well. And in 2007, his hit song "Blame It on the Margaritas" was Song of the Year.
In November, 2010, Howard Livingston also received the WAVE Award at the Trop Rock Music Awards due to his outstanding commitment to community service. This is largely because of the $39,000 he helped raise and donated to the KOA Care Camps, which are camps for children with cancer and their siblings. He has since raised over $100,000 MORE for KOA Care Camp!! We are SO proud to say that we are the nationwide fan club for Howard and the Band!
The Coconut Castaways have been very successful so far and we continue to grow. We now have two local chapters, both located in the state of Florida. We would love to have you join in on the fun! To officially join the Coconut Castaways, please visit our
