What is a Jump Up?
That’s a good question! Most of us had never heard of that term before we started the Coconut Castaways. But a couple of our board members have been to an actual Jump Up on the island of St. Lucia and it’s the perfect way to describe the atmosphere and fun we want to bring to our events.
A Jump Up is a Caribbean block party that rocks, almost literally, the island of St. Lucia every Friday Night. The party takes place in the streets and it’s like a fair or festival in the United States. Roads are blocked off so that people can flood the streets. There are concession stands, grills set up in the streets to cook fresh meats and fish, and card tables covered with bottles of beer and rum punch. (Kind of sounds like the Iowa State Fair, doesn’t it?) Reggae and soca music blare from the bars as people hop from one bar or beer stand to the next, sampling the delicious food and enjoying their Friday night after a long week.

2010 Jump Ups
May 29 - Castaways gathered for a "Sack Lunch" picnic in Rocklyn Park, which is the park we've adopted. It was a great idea to drive through your favorite fast food place and bring goodies to share. No cooking needed!
May 1 - After party at On The Border - We had numerous volunteer events going on that morning so we all met up at OTB for some great food, great drinks and a chance to compare notes from the day.
April 29 - "Spring into Summer Beach Bash" at The Game - Everyone put on the summer attire and enjoyed burgers & brats on the grill, great drinks and some fun music. A good way to hurry spring along so summer can arrive!
March 12 - After work happy hour at Fong's. If you've not been to Fong's, you're missing out! Check out the fusion of pizza, Chinese food and tiki bar. Sounds strange but it works!
February 2 - "Cabin Fever" party at Castaways Bar & Grill in Ramada Tropics Resort. The snow and cold didn't stop us from putting on our shorts and flip flops and enjoying the water park area. Great music by Langer/Hayes.
